My New Bio... Elan Ferguson

Élan’s interest in art began when she was very young. Her father, accomplished artist Edwin G. Cadiz, always supplied her with art supplies and encouragement. Elan grew up watching and admiring him and his work, and as she became older she was introduced to teaching as her father’s assistant.

Élan’s formal training began in the Fashion Institute of Technology where she studied advertisement, design and photography for two years. She graduated from City College of New York City with a BA in Studio Art and Education. She specialized in graphic design, printmaking, and education. Elan also took classes in art instruction and child psychology. She has instructed young people in the arts for eleven years and taught for programs such as the Police Athletic League (P.A.L), Astoria Beacon Program, Young Adult Institute (Y.A.I), Casa Duarte, Say Yes To Education (affiliated with Columbia’s Teachers College), Harlem School of the Arts, Thurgood Marshall Upper and Lower Academies, Harlem Gems (Harlem Children Zone), and the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Elan consults with Dr. Sharon M. Cadiz, an educational and child development expert, while developing her curriculum's. Dr. Cadiz holds a PHD in child development from infancy to 5 year old.

For Elan Ferguson, teaching art is not just a job, it is a family tradition and she takes much pride in her work, the experiences she creates for her students and the art that is made. Her goal is to introduce young minds to the magnificent world of visual art in order to support stages of early literacy as well as strengthen listening, coordination, problem solving and fine motor skills.
