Vincent Van Gogh's Cat

A mom participated and assisted in the creation of the one above. Beautifully done. :)

I did this project at the Harlem School of the Arts where I have been teaching some of Harlem's new up and coming artists. My students are fabulous.
Supplies:
Copies of a page you (the teacher create) inspired by the pages of the story, Vincent Van Gogh's Cat
Watercolor
Construction paper
Glue

Fun Colorful Masks

I read the story Mask Parade by Stephanie Trelogan for Halloween but I didn't want to make Halloween masks so I decided to show the children a collection of photographs of African Kings in a book called, African Kings by Daniel Laine. Usually when I do masks I think of traditional African masks but the masks were made to represent different tribes of people. I thought it would be more interesting to look at faces that inspired the making of the masks. And we discussed (very briefly) observations. I think each participant uniquely displayed their individuality and interpretation of a mask.
Supplies:
Construction Paper
Glue
Scissors

I pre-cut some pieces but I encourage the children to use scissors if they want to personalize a shape.

Building Collages...

I read Abuela by Arthur Durros, to my class and we discussed living in buildings. This discussion lead to our Building Collages.

The students first discuss things that happen inside buildings such as going up and down stairs, looking out of windows, being with families, sitting on furniture etc. Then they are asked to draw and color a scene in their building.

The student above has drawn herself going up stairs.

When the building is placed upon the blue paper it should be placed upon cardboard in order to lift the picture off of the paper's surface. 3D.

Supplies:
CardStock
Red, Brown, Blue and White paper
Glue
Crayons
Cardboard or thick foam
optional: stickers, different color construction paper

Conjure Woman by Romare Bearden

Thurgood Marshall Lower Academy Kindergarten class attended a trip to the Studio Museum in Harlem. We saw and discussed Romare Bearden and his collage, Conjure Women. We observed Romare Bearden's original collage and it was exciting. I read a book that I wrote and illustrated entitled, I Love Collage and we did collage portraits. They are fabulous!
