SUMMER FUN!!!

Working for a New York City Museum has really helped me realize all of the wonderful activities this city and it's museums have to offer. I am almost overwhelmed by the options but I rather have too much to choose from than nothing at all.

To help other busy parents with lots on their plates here are some links to fun stuff i plan to visit...
My kids love the Brooklyn Children's Museum. I have been going since my daughter was two or three and when my son was born he went as well. Not as often as I would like but it is a great resource for Brooklyn residence in the Crown Heights/Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. For me a Harlem resident it takes about an hour to get out there but totally worth the visit. Here is the link to its July http://www.brooklynkids.org/calendar/?view=calendar&month=July-2015 and August http://www.brooklynkids.org/calendar/?view=calendar&month=August-2015 . There calendar is rich with activities and projects for children of all ages!

The mission of the Children’s Museum of the Arts is to introduce children and their families to the transformative power of the arts by providing opportunities to make art side-by-side with working artists and that is that is exactly what they do Thursday thru Monday.

The Brooklyn Museum will be having a Art off the Wall: The Rise of Sneaker Culture day of events filled with art, dance, activities and a building filled with great several other art exhibits.  http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/

The Studio Museum in Harlem has activities every Target Free Sunday for families between the hours of 2pm and 4pm. Catch the free tour at 1pm and then attend any of the Target Free Sunday hands on workshops for everybody! Im highlighting two of seven great activites for teh months of July and August.
August 2nd will be the Rhythm of Color hands on. Artist Stanley Whitney makes connections between color, rhythm, music and structure in his abstract paintings. Visit the galleries to view his solo exhibition, Dance the Orange, then join a workshop to create colorful rhythms in Whitney-inspired artworks. Free live concert with musician Jon Davis from 3pm to 4pm. - See more at: http://www.studiomuseum.org/event-calendar/event/hands-2015-08-02#sthash.gSISEiSu.dpuf

August 30th will be the Art, Sound and Family! hands on. Bring your family and friends, and come celebrate the last Sunday in August with art, music, dance and creativity! Participate in art-making activities with teaching artists, have your face painted, and move to the music during a special performance by Building Beats! - See more at: http://www.studiomuseum.org/event-calendar/event/hands-2015-08-30#sthash.OBaVP7Vd.dpuf

The American Msueum of Natural History currently has a great exhibition on life called LIFE at the Limits: Stories of amazing species. I plan to visit this museum more than once and use it to teach my son about research. I love how AMNH makes learning science FUN!

Every Wednesday and Friday Weeksville Heritage Center offers walk-in tours. As state on their website, "Weeksville, part of the present-day neighborhoods of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant, was an independent free black community, named for James Weeks. Weeks purchased property in 1838, along with other African American investors, in order to create an intentional landowning community.  Continuing the legacy of self-determination, Weeksville's history was rediscovered in 1968 when urbanization threatened to erase the physical memory by destroying the few remaining historic homes. Instead, a grassroots preservation effort was led by artist and activist, Joan Maynard to preserve the Hunterfly Road Houses and the memory of historic Weeksville."

I plan to attend more than one event at the Museum of the City of New York. You can learn so much about this city and create a piece of art or instrument or poems. Just check out their FAMILY CALENDAR!

So many more activities and Museums filled with knowledge, fun, ideas, conversation and more...
Here is a link to a search engine listing of NYC MUSEUMS. Have a great time, take pictures, make memories, write down new knowledge and share with another family!!!!
