Queens Farm

I went apple/ pumpkin picking this weekend with my little ones. It was a lovely trip. The vegetables were beautiful.

My interest in art began when I was very young. My father, accomplished artist Edwin G. Cadiz, always supplied me with art supplies and encouragement. I grew up watching and admiring him and his work, and as I became older I was introduced to teaching as my father’s assistant. My formal training began in the High School of Art & Design. After graduation I was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology where I studied Advertisement and Design and Photography for two years. I graduated from City College of New York City with a BA in Studio Art and Education. I specialized in graphic design, printmaking, and education. I also took classes in art instruction and child psychology. I have instructed young people in the arts for 16 years and taught for or was in collaboration with programs/institutions such as the Police Athletic League (P.A.L), Astoria Beacon Program, Young Adult Institute (Y.A.I), Casa Duarte, P.S. /I.S. 180, Say Yes To Education (affiliated with Columbia’s Teachers College), Harlem School of the Arts, Thurgood Marshall Upper and Lower Academies, Harlem Gems (Harlem Children Zone), No Longer Empty, Cool Culture, Bank Street College, Weeksville Heritage Center, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York Historical Society and Center for Arts Education. My experience as a museum educator/teaching artist began in 2009-10 when I was hired as a visiting teaching artist by the Studio Museum in Harlem. On multiple occasions I designed and facilitated its monthly toddler program, Lil’ Studio, a program that occured once a month. Lil’ Studio is a monthly family program that encourages parents and caregivers with children ages 2.5 to 4 years old to make art together. Also on occasion I had designed and facilitated Hands On workshops, a free art making experience offered during Target Free Sundays. I did that for about two years and in 2011 I was hired as the Family Programs Coordinator/Teaching Artist, part time status. In December 2013 I was made a full-time staff. As my roles changed with the Studio Museum I have researched, designed and coordinated family programs and all administrative aspects of family programs including Target Free Sundays, Lil’ Studio, Books & Authors, Kids and special programs as directed. I established and maintained relationships with individuals, groups and institutions in an effort to extend Museum services to a wider community. I built and fostered relationships with other arts organizations. I promoted and recruited for all Family Programs such as administration of programs including ordering supplies, documentation, submitting artist’s payments, etc. and writing end of year reports. My experience has taught me that I prefer a constructivist teaching model. I have found it very hard to make one-way work for every student so instead of focusing only on the outcome of a project I consider the process. I give each student the steps and framework needed to arrive at a conclusion but I do not interfere with the in-between moments of explorations or the alterations that are sometimes occur. I believe that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. I consults with my mother, Dr. Sharon M. Cadiz, an educational and child development expert, while developing my curriculum. Dr. Cadiz holds a PHD in child development from infancy to 5. For me, teaching art is not just a job, it is a family tradition and I takes much pride in my work, the experiences I create for my students and the art that is made. My goal is to introduce young minds to the visual arts by reading, visual inquiry, dynamic art projects and insightful inquiry in order to support as well as strengthen stages of early literacy, coordination, problem solving and fine motor skills. My blog,DiverseArt4Kids.blogspot.com is a collection of the many workshops I have designed during my 16 years of teaching as well as project ideas, other website links and resources. It was designed to not only teach young people about artists of African descent but to also show how these artists work can assist with teaching math, science, language and more, in the classroom and home.
