What is a Collagraph?

 

A collograph is a assemblege of papers and objects with noticeable textures so when it is glued to a paper or carboard it can be inked and printed.

Magazine Art

 

Don't just throw those old magazines away!

Make them into art by folding the pages.

This is an easy way to create a beautiful geometric shapes and fun for small children as well as older ones (parents included).

 

Just a Shirt and a Pant... or is it.

A fun way to start a drawing sometimes is a starter or in this case a shirt and a pair of pants. This reminds me of a Dr. Seus story the Green Pants. It is about a scared little fuzzy character that is afraid of a pair of pants that walks around with no one in them. As the story continues the fuzzy character realizes, although it maybe unusal the pants are just pants and they become friends. start a drawing off with an idea and see where that can take your lil' artist.

This class was asked to think about people they know in their neighborhood and was able to pick out their character's clothes.

 

 

 

 

 

Children's Books and the Studio Museum

 

Children's Books are celebrated at the Studio Museum every year with Books & Authors, Kids! program. Every year authors and/or illustrators visit, read and do art with families. 2012 Roster included, Charles R. Smith, Pat Cummings, Kwame Alexander, Shane Evans and Bryan Collier.

In 2013 we can expect Jaqueline Woodson and Ambre Anderson.

Paper Sculptures

Paper Sculptures are fun because most think of paper as flat but with this project students are challenged to make 2D into 3D! All you need is some heavy paper (add a pattern and color to make it more fun) glue and fold, smash and roll the paper all kinds of ways. Below are images of different Paper Sculptures that we did at the Studio Museum in Harlem on a Target Free Sunday Hands On workshop.

Élan Bowtique is an invention of my daughter’s cleverness with words, my son’s request for a bowtie and Élan’s LOVE of textiles and charms.

Made in Harlem, NYC and infused with a funky, urban, vintage flair, Élan Bowtique specializes in bows and instinctively constructed with care by artisan Élan, me. Each bow is individually special because I do not use a pattern.

From Astoria, Queens to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Nereid in the Bronx, I'm always looking for interesting and beautiful fabrics and jewelries to create clothing and accessories for myself and others. I only use cherished pieces of fabrics and/or jewelry to produce one-of-a-kind bows and bow accessories.

I am also available for commission work and can make bows from any fabrics if requested.

Élan Bowtique is about fun and living a life that is one of a kind. 

Cardboard Fish Project

I love underwater scenes and I thought fish would be awesome to create but I wanted the fish to be made from cardboard. Everyday materials that lay around or prepared to be thrown away can become excellent tools to create. 

Supplies

* Cardboard Boxes

* Dot Paint for children 2.5 to 4 years because the little plastic pieces can be hazardous and a choking

   hazard to the smaller toddlers

* Small pieces of plastic or paper or any colorful bits that can look like scales. 

* Glue

* Blue Construction Paper

 For older children it is fun to have them create an environment or backdrop for their fish. This can be helpful in discussions about habitat and things one might see in the water. Some students created stories and incorporated mermaids.
